Up

A relative of the African violet, this member of the gesneriad family is rhizomatous.  This makes them both easy to grow and difficult to kill--even if the plant "dies", the rhizomes are capable of producing new growth.  They are fast, vigorous, growers--don't be squeamish about cutting them back occasionally.  This will encourage them to branch, grow fuller, and flower even more.  New growth will also appear from the base, easily filling any size pot.

Freely produced blooms are fuzzy with spotted throats, and leaves are lush and velvety.  Care same as for violets, and they do very well in windows (where we grow most of our mature plants), where they will tolerate conditions that others will not.  They also make excellent "cut flowers"--just put stems in a vase with water where they will continue to grow and bloom (in water) almost indefinitely!
