The Violet Barn

2010 Ohio State AVS Convention Show

Court of HonorAs always, the 2010 Ohio State AVS Convention show  was held at the Kingwood Center in Mansfield, Ohio.  The mid-September weather was terrific (after the storms on set-up day blew through), which meant the gardens were beautiful and much was still in bloom.

The theme of this year's show was "Rainbow of Violets", which was appropriate, given the colorful violets on exhibit and the theme of the design division, which will be shown below.

Shown at left are the winners placed on the "court of honor".

Rob's Chilly WillyRed CloudSaintpaulia confusa

Shown at left are three of the big winners at the show.  At far left, is the Best in Show, 'Rob's Chilly Willy'.  This was our (Rob's) entry, and now has won top honors at this show for the last three years.  People will get tired of seeing it.....it just goes to show what a superior variety this one is.

2nd Best in show, and Best standard, went to Brenda Petry for her plant of 'Red Cloud'.  Brenda doesn't often enter showplants was glad she did here!  At right is S. confusa clone #5b, the Best species in show, grown by Pat Gibson.

Peridot's Kitlope Aeschynanthus humilisThere were a number of plants besides African violets exhibited.  There were a LOT of chirita and petrocosmea, thanks in large part to the Carrs--must've been just about every species grown!

One of the Canadian members, Doris Brownlie, brought a number of entries, including gesneriads.  Shown at left are two of hers.  At far left is the Best other gesneriad in show, Kohleria 'Peridots Kitlope'.  This variety is frequently seen winning at shows, for good reason.  At near left is Aeshynanthus humilis, also grown by Doris, and a Best in class winner.

A few more of the plants seen at the show, from left to right:

'Jolly Orchid' a semimini by Debbie McInnis.
'Irish Flirt', a semimini entered by Rob.
'Optimara Evergrace', standard of Pat Gibson's.
'Frozen in Time', standard by Doris Brownlie, at near left.

YellowOrangeOraneVioletThe design schedule was written by Mel Grice, and was simple, yet clever.  Each class was simply a color, leaving the designer to intepret the mood of that color.

At far left is "yellow", and is Olive's Best in Design entry.  The arrangement is attached (not visibly) to the back of the niche to give it a "suspended" appearance.  Next is the Best in class entry in "orange" from Pat Hancock.  This was a miniature arrangement, as was the next one in that class of Olive's.  At far right is Mel's Best in class entry in "violet".  Mel entered every class in design, winning sweepstakes--whew!

Next year's show is scheduled for Kingwood, September 15-17, 2011.
