March Contest Winners
Violet Barn Photo Contest – March 2017
Once again, many deserving entries, but we had to make a difficult decision to select just a few. Here are the winners (click on thumbnail photo to view full size image):
First Prize winner
Julie Lucht is the winner of our latest photo contest, with her entry of sinningia ‘Bristol’s Good Morning’. Sinningia speciosa can be spectacular plants, and this variety is one the nicer ones, producing a spectacular display on a relatively compact plant.
The plant is beautifully grown and illustrates perfectly how it can be displayed in the typical home. Julie wins a $50 coupon good towards a future purchase. Unfortunately, we haven’t any sinningia speciosa ready to ship at this time–we will later this spring, though. Look for them!
Second Prize winner
Second place went to Joanne Isaak, the photo of her collection of kohleria. These were grown through the South Dakota winter in her east-facing window. Kohlerias shown (left to right) are ‘HCY’s Big Smile’, ‘Jardin de Monet’, and (hidden in back) ‘Napolean V’. Two Saintpaulia species also appear, S. ionantha and S grandifolia #299. Jeanne wins a $10 coupon good towards a future purchase. Both kohleria and the African violet species are easy, tolerant of neglect, plants for the home, perfect for a windowsill. Of course, these don’t appear to have been neglected–Joanne’s done a great job caring for them!
Honorable mention
There were so many worthy entries, we decided to hand out more awards. Ruth Hoffman receives a $5 coupon for her photo of ‘Kev’s Heavenly Star’. Ruth also submitted the photo of ‘Grape Glory’ that appears below.
Below appear some of the other entries. We can’t show them all, but these are the photos we found most interesting. Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all who entered.
